Woman Finds Masterpiece Worth Millions in her Kitchen
For many years, an elderly woman in Paris, France, had, what she thought, was an old copy of a painting hanging on a wall between her kitchen and sitting room, directly over a hotplate that she used for cooking food. The painting was called, “The Mocking of Christ”.
In September 2019, an auctioneer friend suggested she have it checked for authenticity, which she did, and was told it was an original masterpiece by the 13th-century Italian painter Cimabue, worth, perhaps, $6.5 million US, at auction! For years she thought it was worthless.
In October, 2019, the painting was put up for auction and was sold for $26.6 million US.
How many years did this woman struggle to get by, never realizing that she was sitting on a fortune!
